A few weekends ago, I took a quick road trip down to Florida. On the way, we stopped by an interesting roadside attraction. Behold, the world’s largest peanut monument:
This girthy fella is right off highway 75 in south Georgia about 80 miles north of the Georgia Florida state line. It was constructed in 1975 and designed by A.R. Smith Jr. It is allegedly the largest likeness of a peanut standing today.
I say without shame that I absolutely love kitchy stuff like this. Someday I hope to see the world’s largest ball of twine, Henry’s Rabbit Ranch, and the Uranus Fudge Factory (totally a real place), among other oddball tourist stops. Yes these are notably cheesy attractions, but I find these places to be fun.
There is another supposed World’s Largest Peanut in Durant, Oklahoma, but you can clearly see based on the photos that, in the competition for heftiest legume, the one in Georgia is tops.
So if you’re driving down I-75 toward Florida, give the peanut a look if you have an extra 10 minutes. There’s even a Zaxby’s right down the street which is a great lunch stop if you’re in the mood for delicious chicken (they have quite possibly the best fast food salads of all time). If just looking at a nut is not enough and you’d like to actually eat some, about a half hour drive north on I-75 is Ellis Brothers Pecans. They sell some of the most delicious pecans I’ve ever eaten as well as a variety of other nuts.
